What is Christopher Langan's IQ?

Christopher Langan's IQ is reported at between 195 and 210, measured on high-ceiling tests designed to discriminate at the extreme upper tail. He has been widely described in the press as the smartest man in America.

Where does the 195–210 number come from?

Langan's scores come from a family of tests built specifically to measure beyond the range where standard instruments stop discriminating. Those tests are not normed the way the Wechsler scales are; several are untimed and taken unsupervised, and the resulting figures are not directly comparable to a proctored clinical result.

His story became widely known through Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, which used him as a case study in how raw ability without social capital, institutional support or the ability to navigate bureaucracy can fail to convert into conventional achievement. Langan has disputed aspects of that framing.

Either way it is a useful counterweight to the assumption that a very high score is destiny.
