What is Terence Tao's IQ?

Terence Tao's IQ is reported at somewhere between 220 and 230, from testing done in childhood as part of Miraca Gross's longitudinal study of exceptionally gifted children. It is a ratio IQ from a young child, with all the caveats that carries.

Where does the 220–230 number come from?

Tao is arguably the strongest case in this collection for a childhood score predicting something real. He took university mathematics courses at nine, won a Fields Medal at thirty-one, and is regarded as one of the leading mathematicians alive.

Even so, the number carries the standard prodigy caveat: it is a ratio IQ measured on a child, on tests without a meaningful ceiling at that level, and it does not translate to the modern scale.

Tao himself has written repeatedly against the mystique. His public position is that mathematical progress comes from hard work, reading, asking questions, and steady accumulation over years — and that the genius framing actively discourages people who would otherwise do good work. Worth weighing against the number.

How rare would a 230 IQ be?

If the 230 end of that range were literally true, it would be extraordinarily rare — rarer than1 in ∞ people. That alone is a good reason to treat any confident-sounding celebrity IQ number with a raised eyebrow.
