What is a good IQ score?

Anything above 115 is above average. 130 is where gifted usually starts. The harder question is what you want the number to do for you, because for most purposes the answer is not much.

Most people asking this have a number in hand and want to know whether to be pleased. Here is the direct answer, then the more useful one.

The classification bands

The Wechsler convention is what mainstream tests report against, and it is the source of nearly every band you will see quoted.

Score Classification Share of people
130 and up Very superior (gifted) Top 2%
120 to 129 Superior Top 9%
110 to 119 High average Top 25%
90 to 109 Average Middle 50%
80 to 89 Low average Bottom 25%
70 to 79 Borderline Bottom 9%

By that table, good starts somewhere around 110 and stops being arguable by 120. Our full IQ scale breaks down what every score inside each band means.

The bands hide something important

Those boundaries are conventions. Nothing happens cognitively at 130 that does not happen at 129, and the line sits where it does because 2 percent was a convenient share to carve off.

This matters more than it sounds. People who score 128 or 129 routinely read the result as a near miss. It is not one. Measurement error on a full clinical test runs a few points in either direction, and on a short online screener it runs wider. A 129 and a 131 are the same score wearing different labels.

Treat a band as the unit of meaning. Treat the exact point as noise.

Good for what?

This is the question that actually resolves things, because good is not a property of a number. It depends entirely on the use.

For a formal purpose

Thresholds here are real, specific, and enforced. Gifted programme entry, high-IQ society membership, and clinical evaluation all use defined cutoffs, and all of them require a supervised test administered by a professional. Mensa, for instance, works from a percentile rather than a fixed number, which is why its qualifying score looks different depending on which test you took.

No unproctored online test qualifies you for any of these. Not ours, not anyone’s.

For predicting how you will do

Cognitive ability correlates positively with academic achievement and job performance, and the relationship strengthens as work gets more complex. That is a genuine finding and worth knowing.

It is also weaker than the popular framing suggests. A correlation around 0.5, which is the figure often quoted for ability and performance in complex roles, accounts for roughly a quarter of the variation. The other three quarters is everything else. We cover the evidence properly in does IQ predict success.

The effect also shrinks inside selected groups. Among surgeons or research physicists, nearly everyone already scores well above average, so ability barely separates anyone. What separates them is judgement, stamina, and who they know.

For curiosity

This is why most people take a test, and it is a perfectly good reason. A score tells you roughly where you sit on one kind of reasoning task. That is genuinely interesting information about yourself, and it is not a verdict on anything.

What a good score does not tell you

A reasoning test measures a narrow slice of ability on a single afternoon. It says nothing about creativity, discipline, emotional judgement, ethics, or whether you are good to work with.

Richard Feynman reportedly tested at 125, a score that is good but unremarkable among physics graduate students, and then won a Nobel Prize. Garry Kasparov, the only person in our collection with a properly proctored number, measured 135 while holding the world chess championship for fifteen years. Both numbers are lower than people expect, which says more about the expectations than the men.

How to read your own number sensibly

Three habits make a score more useful and less loaded.

Read the band, not the point. If you scored 118, you are in the high average range. The 118 itself carries a margin of error that makes the last digit meaningless.

Check what the test actually was. A score means nothing without knowing what it was measured against. Norming is the entire ballgame, which is why we explain how IQ is measured rather than just handing over a figure.

Expect movement. Retest and you will usually score a few points differently. That is normal for every test ever built, including the clinical ones.

If you want a number to interpret, our free IQ test takes about ten minutes and shows the result immediately, with no sign-up and nothing gated at the end.

Key takeaways

  • Above 115 is above average, 120 to 129 is superior, and 130 and up is the usual gifted threshold.
  • Band boundaries are conventions, not cognitive thresholds. A 129 and a 131 are the same score.
  • Formal purposes like gifted programmes and Mensa need a supervised professional test. No online score qualifies.
  • Cognitive ability predicts academic and job performance moderately, accounting for roughly a quarter of the variation in outcomes.
  • The correlation weakens sharply inside already-selected groups, where other factors dominate.
  • A reasoning score measures one narrow ability on one day. It says nothing about creativity, discipline, or worth.

Common questions

What is a good IQ score?

Above 115 is above average, 120 to 129 is classified superior, and 130 and up is the usual gifted threshold. 100 is exactly average by design.

Is 120 a good IQ?

Yes. A 120 sits around the 91st percentile, meaning it is higher than roughly nine people in ten. It is comfortably inside the superior band.

Is 110 a good IQ score?

It is above average. A 110 lands around the 75th percentile, in the high average band, which covers roughly the top quarter of scores.

What IQ is considered genius?

No mainstream classification uses the word genius. The highest standard band is very superior, starting at 130. The popular association of 140 with genius has no basis in any test manual.

Is a 100 IQ bad?

No. 100 is the exact midpoint of the scale, which means you scored higher than about half of people. It is the single most common place to land.

What percentage of people have an IQ over 130?

About 2 percent, or roughly 1 in 44 people. That is why 130 is used as the gifted threshold and as the entry line for high-IQ societies.

Does a good IQ score guarantee success?

No. Cognitive ability correlates with academic and job performance, but it explains a limited share of the variation in outcomes. Preparation, persistence and circumstance account for far more.

Is 129 much worse than 130?

No. The measurement error on a good clinical test is a few points either way, so 129 and 131 are effectively the same score. The 130 line is a convention, not a cognitive event.

What is a good IQ score for a child?

Children are compared to their own age group, so the same bands apply. A childhood score is a weaker predictor of adult ability than most people assume, especially before about age ten.

Do free online IQ tests give accurate scores?

A well-built one gives a reasonable band. Precision is the problem, not direction. Any short unproctored test should be read as roughly here, not exactly this.
