Fluid vs crystallized intelligence

One is your ability to reason through a problem you have never seen. The other is everything you have accumulated. They are measured differently, they peak at different times, and conflating them causes most of the confusion about IQ and ageing.

Raymond Cattell proposed the split, and his student John Horn developed it. It remains the most useful distinction in the whole subject, because it explains something the single IQ number obscures.

The two abilities

Fluid intelligence is reasoning about problems you have not seen before. Spotting the rule in a sequence, completing an abstract pattern, holding several constraints in mind while working towards a solution. It is deliberately independent of what you happen to know.

Crystallized intelligence is everything you have accumulated. Vocabulary, facts, procedures, professional judgement. It is knowledge that has set.

The metaphor is doing real work. Fluid ability is the process; crystallized ability is what that process has deposited over a lifetime.

How each is measured

Fluid reasoning is tested with items requiring no prior knowledge. Ravens Progressive Matrices is the archetype: a grid of abstract shapes with one missing, and no vocabulary, culture or schooling needed to attempt it. The matrix items on our own free IQ test work the same way.

Crystallized ability is tested with vocabulary, general knowledge and comprehension items. These reward exposure, which is exactly the point.

Full clinical batteries like the WAIS sample both and report separate index scores, which is one of the main things a short screener cannot do.

Why they diverge with age

This is where the distinction earns its keep.

Fluid ability tends to peak in early adulthood and decline gradually afterwards. Crystallized ability typically holds steady or continues improving well into later life.

The practical consequence is familiar to anyone who has worked with an experienced colleague. Raw reasoning speed is lost; accumulated structure is gained. A sixty-year-old specialist routinely outperforms a faster-reasoning twenty-five-year-old inside their own domain, because the problem is not actually novel to them. It is only novel to the newcomer.

Which one should you care about?

Neither, in isolation.

Fluid ability matters most where problems are genuinely unfamiliar and there is no established method to fall back on. Crystallized ability matters most inside a domain, which is where most professional work actually happens.

The uncomfortable implication for anyone hoping to raise their score is that fluid ability is the part that resists training. Practice improves the trained task without transferring elsewhere. Crystallized ability, by contrast, responds to exactly the thing that sounds least like a shortcut: sustained study over years.

A note on the Flynn effect

The distinction also explains one of the odder findings in the field. Twentieth-century score gains concentrated heavily on fluid reasoning items and were much smaller on vocabulary and arithmetic.

That uneven pattern is hard to square with people simply becoming more intelligent, and easier to square with people becoming more practised at abstract, decontextualised problems specifically. The argument is laid out in the Flynn effect.
